Company of Angels Launches the Next 50 Years with Theater of & for Los Angeles
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR WORK TO REDEFINE THEATER FOR THE FUTURE
Five years ago, in anticipation of our 50th Anniversary, Company of Angels Theater dedicated itself to a new mission: depict Los Angeles (as a place and a concept) in all its multi-ethnic, multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-gendered glory. Over the last five years we have featured new work by Los Angeles based playwrights, Ricardo Bracho, Jonathan Ceniceroz, Damon Chua, Sigrid Gilmer, Oliver Mayer, Henry Ong, Evangeline Ordaz and Bernardo Solano. These plays depicted communities as diverse as West Hollywood, Montebello, Culver City, Thai and Latino Immigrants, and Skid Row. For the last four years a group of diverse playwrights have developed new work in our Playwrights’ Group. Our Mutual Education Theater Academy has worked with low-income residents in Boyle Heights, high school students in El Sereno, and residents of Skid Row by teaching them how to use theater to tell their stories. Our work in service of our new mission received both government and private foundation grants, a first for the Company. Our move to Fifth and Spring has played a vital role in the Downtown Los Angeles arts revitalization.
All the plays in our current season are also new works by Los Angeles based artists, all of whom represent a diverse perspective not often seen on the LA stage. In January “Fatigued” is two one act plays depicting the aftermath of the Iraqi War for its veterans . In February, “Baby Eyes”, by Donald Jolly, takes place in 1955 at the intersection of racism and homophobia as a young Italian-Jewish boy forms a friendship with an African-American intellectual. In April the CoA Playwrights Group presents the fourth annual LA Views, exploring the economic downturn from a Downtown perspective. In May, “Bordering on Love” by Evangeline Ordaz, looks at love, marriage and immigration with a beauty pageant twist. We end the season in July with “Sun Sisters” by S. Vasanti Saxena whose tale of a mother’s secret, surprises and challenges her daughter. Our Mutual Education Theater Academy, continues with the 3rd Annual “Boyle Heights Community Posada” and the Alexandria Workshop for skid row residents, which is preparing for a performance of their new work in January.
We need your help to take theater into the future. Will you support the 2010/11 CoA season with a tax-deductible donation? No donation is too small or too big and we appreciate anything you can contribute. We look forward to seeing you at Company of Angels Theater.
All the Best,
